Workshops
The UMPRUM workshops provide students from individual studios with a wide foundation for their projects’ realization. The workshops offer a space for material and technological experiments. The high standard of craft production is ensured under the professional guidance of the workshop managers. UMPRUM students may use several above-standard workshop facilities in the areas of graphic art (gravure, serigraphy, offset, lithography, bookbinding), glass casting and grinding, carpentry, ceramics, stucco, metal, jewellery, fashion, clothing and footwear, textile, model making (CNC, laser, vacuum pressing), photography, postproduction, and film and animation.

All but one of the UMPRUM workshops can be found in the Technology Centre Mikulandská 5, Prague 1. The brand new UMPRUM detachment designed by two of the former UMPRUM architecture professors (Ivan Kroupa and Jana Moravcová) houses 22 workshops and you can easily reach the place by tram (No. 18, 2, 9, 22, 23, Národní
třída stop) or by metro (yellow line, Národní třída station).
The Lithography workshops moved temporarily to Žitná street 16 in Prague 2 (basement, room no. S18). You can walk there from Mikulandská 5 or get there by tram No. 3, 5, 5, 9, 24
from Lazarská stop or tram No. 10, 16, 22, 23 from Štěpánská stop. Once the main
UMPRUM building has been renovated, the workshop will move back to the main UMPRUM
building again.
UMPRUM workshops are usually open for students from Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm but it´s always necessary to make an appointment with the managers of the specific workshops before you turn up there. You can ask them in person in the Mikulandská workshops or contact them by email. Their email addresses can be found here. You always need to bring your own material and a sketch/drawing/ model/data of the work you want them to produce.
It is also necessary to take a basic training on occupational safety; without it you would not be allowed to work in the workshops. The training happens at the beginning of each semester in Mikulandská 5. You also must read the safety and health rules at UMPRUM and take a test on the UMPRUM Moodle. Grading system at UMPRUM
At UMPRUM, we use 4-point grading system, with grade 1 as the best, and 4 as the worst.
If you earn grade 1, it means your performance was “excellent” and you got A+, A, and A-. Grade 2 means your performance was “very good”, which is equivalent to grade B+, B, and B- . Grade 3 stands for C+, C, and C- and evaluates your performance as “good”. In case your grade is 4, it means you failed (F) because your performance was “insufficient and unsatisfactory”. If you fail an exam or a state exam, you have two more attempts to pass them. If you get F for your klauzura/ semester work, you have one more attempt to repeat it.
However, those are not the only grades you can earn for your klauzuras (end-of-semester projects) and for the work during the semester. The studio and the jury evaluate your work and performance by giving you the following score: 12, 11, 10 points (A+, A, A-, grade 1); 9, 8, 7 (B+, B, B-, grade B), 6, 5, 4 (C+, C, C-, grade C) and 3–0 (F, grade 4 or 5).
Master's Degree Students' Rights and Responsibilities
- Do a one-semester exchange in another UMPRUM studio than they were accepted to – preferably in the first year of their studies (you will need consent from both heads of the two studios)
- Transfer to another UMPRUM studio – you can transfer to another studio after having spent at least one semester there as an exchange student (you will need the consent of both the heads of the two studios); you cannot transfer to another studio in the fourth semester of your studies (for architecture students this applies to the sixth semester)
- Repeat the school academic year because of poor performance or for other reasons (you will need consent from the head of your studio)
- Have 3 attempts to pass an exam, including the final state exam
- Have 2 attempts to present their end-of-semester work (klauzura) – if you fail your klauzura, you can repeat the presentation in September / February; and if you fail the klauzura twice, you must repeat the whole academic year
- Interrupt their studies for the maximum of 4 semesters (you will need consent from the head of your studio) – if you interrupt your studies in the middle of the first semester of the study program (i.e. you don’t gather any credits for the first semester), you will have to repeat the whole academic year after resuming your studies; to be able to interrupt your studies after one/two/three semesters without the need to repeat the whole academic year, you must have enough credits from the previous semesters and have passed all mandatory subjects for your field of study
- Postpone their diploma presentation for up to three years (2 + 3); you will have to gain consent from the head of your studio and get a form signed by them
- Terminate their studies without the need to pay for the semesters they are not going to take (you do not need consent of the head of your studio to drop out)
- Apply for an Erasmus traineeship (work-placements) in EU countries over the summer holidays (July-September) while having the status of student, apply for the Erasmus+ study program abroad and spend one semester at a university UMPRUM has a bilateral agreement with, and apply for an Erasmus traineeship in EU countries within the period of one year after the graduation. - Attend any lectures UMPRUM offers (if you get a permission to do so from the lecturers)
IMPORTANT:
In all the cases mentioned here, you will have to formally apply by submitting a filled-in application form to the VA Coordinator by specific deadlines (usually mid-September, mid-January). The form can be downloaded on the VA intranet. The form must be signed by the head of your studio in case you want to repeat the academic year, repeat your klauzura presentation, interrupt your studies, postpone your diploma, and do an Erasmus exchange for one semester. If you want to do a one-semester internship and transfer to another studio, the form must be signed by the head of your studio and the head of the other studio you are going to study in.
- Read and follow all UMPRUM safety rules and technical staff instructions
- Pass two tests related to health and safety rules and fire alarm regulations on Umprum Moodle.
- Earn all necessary credits by mid of September (60 credits) to be able to enrol in the second/third year of their studies; it’s possible to miss credits for two obligatory classes and transfer these two classes to the following academic year
- Repeat (or terminate) their studies if they fail to gain credits for the work during the winter or summer semester in the studio (due to poor attendance), successfully present their end-of-semester project for the second time and gain enough credits to enrol in the following year of their studies
- Submit an application form every time they want to apply for a one-semester exchange, transfer to another studio, repetition of the school year, suspension or termination of their studies, etc.
- Comply with the requirements of the study plan/curricula for each given study program, i.e. each semester, gain credits for the work in the studio during the semester (assessed by the head of the studio), end-of-semester project presentation (klauzura, assessed by the jury), for mandatory lectures and elective workshops
- Pass the final state exam (three attempts)
- Pay the tuition fees by the deadline (see above)
- Students can be also expelled from studies for a disciplinary infraction, which occurs “when obligations stipulated in legal regulations or in the internal regulations of a higher education institution or its constituent parts are infringed“ /Section 64, Act No. 111/1998 Coll., on Higher Education Institutions and on Amendments and Supplements to some other Acts; for more see here.
